Can You Fake It? Ever heard of the term 'Fake' book? Does the term fake-book imply that there will be a real book? I always wondered what a fake book might possibly mean? No more secrets, I am going to share with you the secrets to fake books. If you aren't already familiar with what a 'fake' book is, let me fill you in. A fake book, is a collection of lead sheets. A lead sheet is an abridgement of a song in skeletal form to cause a musician to fill in the blanks having an rythm accompaniment and A fake book is the one book that every musician, amateur or professional, should own. A lot of pro-musicians use the fake books as if it were their own musician's bible. A 'fake' book contains all kinds of songs for all types of occasions. They store hundreds if not thousands of songs which can be deciphered by a musician who is familiar with basic chord formations including but not limited to 7th chords. The Musician's Bible - The Fake Book 'Fake' books can contain over 1000 songs. Because they abridge the songs so that it contains only the lyrics, melody line and the accompanying chords. These abbreviated or shall we say, music short hand,versions of songs save considerable amount of page space and usually occupy only 1/4 to 1/2 of a page. There are Fake books in Just about every music genre known. Your favorite band and songs can all be rendered quite easily with a fake book. Basically a fake book contains 3 things vital to the performance of a song: 1. The chords (ie. symbols like AMaj9-sus2 etc), 2. The lyrics 3. The melody A fake book contains a lot of different songs so that a solo player can even take requests. Inside these fabulous books there are hit songs of today, broadway songs, songs from the movies, songs from the Roaring 20's, Gay 90's, some Irish songs, Folk songs, Italian songs, Hawaiian songs, Great Classical themes, Sacred songs, Rock n' Roll songs, Waltzes, Marches, Cumbia you name it! 'Fake' books have allowed musicians to play songs that would otherwise be unavailable.
Until recently, such books, if you could find them, were sold under the table, because they didn't pay tribute to the music authors or publishers properly, i.e. giving the author credit and paying royalties etc. They were basically stealing other's music and not giving credit where credit was due. Musicians would pay a great amount of money to obtain these underground 'fake' books. Nowadays we can legally buy these great fake books chock full of great songs while giving the author/authors their proper credit, royalties and respect, etc..
